When talking about Maine high school baseball, one of the first names that invariably comes up is that of Bob Kelley.

In a 32-year coaching career at Bangor High, Kelley's teams won eight Class A state championships and appeared in 15 state finals. His teams appeared in the tournament 23 times.

Kelley was born September 21, 1936, in Waterville and moved to Bangor at the age of four. Nine years later his family moved to Veazie, where he still lives.

Kelley graduated from Bangor High School in 1954 where he had an outstanding baseball and basketball career. He was also a summer star for the Bangor American Legion team.

He attended the University of Maine and had an outstanding freshman season playing baseball. But a shoulder injury, suffered while playing basketball, made it difficult for him to throw overhand and Kelley's career ended.

He was always a natural leader and had an instinctive mind for the game of baseball, so he went into teaching and coaching.

After graduating from Maine in 1959, his first job was at the Fifth Street Junior High in Bangor. He not only taught, but also coached all three seasons.

Two of his former players at Fifth Street Junior High, John Stubbs and Neil Waterman, would later serve as his assistant coaches at Bangor for 27 years.

In 1968, Kelley became the head coach at Bangor. And expectations weren't exactly high for a struggling program.

As Kelley said, "Public expectations were low when I took over the job. There was not a lot to shoot at. All I did was try to convince the good athletes to come out for baseball and give themselves a chance to play beyond that level."

As evidenced by his success, he accomplished that goal and made Bangor one of the state's premier baseball programs.

He retired in 2000, one year after being inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.?
