Candida Shelton

Ranked 8th in a class of 121 students, Candida Shelton was named to the National Honor Society in 1977-'78, and 1978-'79. Based on a 4-point system, she has a 3.7 average. Ms. Shelton is a three-year letter winner in field hockey. She was captain and MVP in 1978 as Winthrop won the Eastern Maine Class C Championship. Also captain of the ski team, she is the first female to letter in the sport at the school. She's a three-year letter winner in track with another season to go, and just to stay busy in her spare time, she's won five National Championships in Whitewater Canoe competition. Other extra school participation found her winning a letter five years and finishing in the top six in her events fourteen times in the Maine YMCA Swim League.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
