Joseph Roy-Mayhew

Deering High School

A participant in cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, and tennis at Deering High School in Portland, Joseph Roy-Mayhew has enjoyed a successful high school athletic career both from a team and an individual perspective. A four-year member of the Deering cross country squads, Joseph was All-SMAA as a senior and played a significant role in the Rams winning back-to-back state crowns in 2002 and 2003. He was also part of three SMAA championship squads in indoor track and integral to the Rams winning state honors during his junior and senior campaigns. Joseph has also enjoyed success in tennis where he was part of three conference-winning squads and one state championship club as a freshman.

Joseph continues his successful ways in the classroom, where he is third in a class of 335 students with a 97.57 career average. Joseph has studied a challenging curriculum, which includes advanced placement classes in calculus and English. He has also built an impressive resume in terms of his involvement in co-curricular activities. He is a four-year member of the Academic Decathlon Team and has earned two silver and one gold medal in mathematics and a silver and bronze medal in science. He has also excelled on the Deering Math Team and was sixth place in the state competition as a freshman and twelfth as a junior. He is a student coach for the middle school track team and a member of the National Honor Society and Class Senate. He has won several academic awards, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay Contest, the Yale Book Award, and the RPI Medal.

Joseph has been accepted as of this writing at MIT and RPI and awaits the decision of several Ivy League schools. His intended major is engineering. He is the son of Brian Mayhew and Donna Lapp of Portland.

Our Mission

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
