Robert McPhee

Bob grew up in West Peru (now Peru), Maine. He graduated from Rumford High (now Mountain Valley) in 1977. While at Rumford he earned varsity letters in football, wrestling, and baseball. He was honored in Who's Who Among High School Students for 1976-'77.

Bob sustained a brain stem contusion while playing football during a scrimmage on 9/4/76. After 17 days in a coma, he awoke to only be able to move his eyelids. Bob was paralyzed. While residing in Maine Independent Living Center in Bangor House, He attended Husson College in Bangor, majoring in Small Business Administration from January, 1980-May, 1981. He then transferred to University of Maine and received his degree (a BA in journalism) in 1984.

He is currently employed as a staff writer in the Sports Department of the Lewiston Sun Journal and has been since September, 1987.

He has been rewarded by his work and awarded for his effort. He received the 1996 State Editor-of-the-Year Award by Wrestling USA Magazine. In 1997, the Media Award for Writer of the Year was awarded to Bob by the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. 1998 found the Media Award form the Maine Field Hockey Association go to Bob McPhee. He was inducted into the Maine Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2000 for his writing and wrestling career.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
