A four-sport performer at Gray-New Gloucester, Laura Getchell has participated in cross country, soccer, basketball, and softball during her four years at the school. After earning varsity letters in soccer as a sophomore and a junior, Laura was team captain of the Patriots' girls' cross country squad in 2009 and was named a Western Maine Conference All-Academic award recipient. Laura is also a four-year letter winner in basketball. She has been an All-Conference selection on two occasions and represented Gray-New Gloucester in the Western Maine Conference All-Star Game.
Laura has emerged as one of the top softball pitchers in Western Maine Class B. She is a four-year starter for the Patriots and entering her senior season had recorded 589 strikeouts. On May 6, 2009, she struck out 34 opposing batters in a 14-inning contest. After being a Western Maine Conference Second-Team All-Star performer in 2007, she was recognized with First Team All-Conference honors in 2008 and 2009.
In addition to her participation in athletics, Laura has established a strong reputation as a leader in her school. She has received numerous academic awards, including the MPA Principal's Award, the Williams College Book Award, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Award, and a Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine Certificate of Recognition. Laura is a member of the Gray-New Gloucester chapter of the National Honor Society and has also served as a volunteer coach in her local parks and recreation department.
An excellent student, Laura has a career average of 99.98 in a program that includes a number of honors and advanced placement courses. Laura is the valedictorian in her class of 119 students. She will attend Wesleyan University in the fall and is planning to major in biology while pursuing pre-medical requirements. Laura is the daughter of David and Karen Getchell and resides in Raymond.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
