John Gilboy

A three-sport athlete at Thornton Academy in Saco, John Gilboy has participated in football, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field during his four-year career. One of the top football linemen in the state, John was a three-year starter for the Golden Trojans. After earning All-Conference honors as a guard during his junior year, he was named team captain as a senior. John helped lead his team to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the Western Maine Class A finals. He was All-Conference on both sides of the ball and was selected as an All-State defensive tackle. For his efforts, John was named a semifinalist for the prestigious James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy.

John has also excelled in both indoor and outdoor track and field as a thrower. He was fifth in the state Class A meet as a junior in the shot put and was state runner-up in that event in 2009. A four-year participant in outdoor track, he was fourth in the league championship meet in the shot put in 2008 and followed up that effort with a fifth-place finish in the state meet. John's efforts helped propel his team to the 2008 state Class A championship.

John is an outstanding student leader at Thornton. He has served as both class president and as student body president. In addition, John is a member of the National Honor Society and Interact, a community service organization. He has participated in the Science Olympiad program. John was named the recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award.

John has a career grade point average of 4.273 and ranks fourth in his class of 304 students. He plans to attend Colby College in the fall where he will major in biochemistry and play football for the White Mules. John is the son of John and Venus Gilboy and resides in Saco.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
