Darren Smith participated in football and lacrosse during his four-year career at Scarborough High School. An outstanding linebacker for the Red Storm football team, he was named an honorable mention All-SMAA player as a junior and was the team defensive most valuable player. In 2007 he was team captain for Scarborough, and was named the team's outstanding linebacker and selected for the SMAA All-Conference squad. He has been selected to participate in the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl All-Star game in July.
A four-year varsity letter winner in lacrosse, Darren was the team's Most Improved Player as a freshman and earned the program's Blue Collar Award in both 2006 and 2007. Darren also played on the 2006 Red Storm lacrosse team that won the Class A state title.
Darren has participated in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, including Key Club, Varsity Club, and the National Honor Society. He has given back to his community by serving as a youth football coach and participating in fundraisers to benefit medical research for multiple sclerosis. He has served as both a lifeguard and as a mentor for special needs children.
Darren has performed well in the classroom, and his career average of 89.49 places him 70th in his class of 241 students. He intends to attend either Hobart College or Hamilton College in the fall, where he plans to be a pre-medicine or biology major. He is the son of Daniel and Brenda Smith and resides in Scarborough.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
