A two-sport performer at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Hunter Nichols participated in basketball and baseball for the Huskies. A standout backcourt player at MCI, Hunter was a starter during both his junior and senior seasons and led the Huskies in scoring in 2006-2007. The talented point guard earned three varsity letters in basketball and was team captain during his final campaign. Often given the responsibility of guarding the opponent's best player, Hunter's efforts helped propel MCI into the Eastern Maine Class B tournament during the past two seasons and earned him the team's coveted Coach's Award. He was named to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference all-star squad as an honorable mention player and selected as an all-academic player for the 2006-2007 season.
In addition to his athletic interests, Hunter has been very active in other clubs and programs at MCI. He was named to the Maine Central Institute chapter of the National Honor Society. Hunter has also been a peer leader in his school and has served with the MCI Key Club. Hunter has also demonstrated an interest in journalism; he is editor of the school newspaper. Committed to working with area youth, he has conducted youth basketball and soccer clinics and has been a head lifeguard at a community swimming venue. In addition, he volunteers time each summer during the annual Egg Festival in Pittsfield.
Hunter has also been a solid performer in the classroom as well. He was named Spanish III Student of the Year as a junior. He has a career average of 89.08 in a strong academic program that includes Advanced Placement Chemistry and physics. He ranks 24th in his class of 137 students. Hunter plans to attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health in the fall where he will major in Health Sciences. He is son of James Nichols and Lori Barker and resides in Pittsfield.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
